Katy Otto relocated to Philadelphia after living in Washington, DC. Ms. Otto has two decades of experience in communications and fundraising/development for violence prevention, women’s issues, youth development, criminal justice/juvenile justice reform, child welfare, poverty, and arts organizations. She graduated from University of Maryland, College Park and later became certified through the University of Indiana School of Fundraising. She has a Masters in Nonprofit Management from Trinity University.
Ms. Otto runs her own independent record label Exotic Fever Records and has given workshops on such diverse topics as direct action around issues of violence against women, community response to sexual assault, animal abuse and partner violence, punk rock activism, and women and girls in music. Ms. Otto has toured the country several times playing drums in her former band Del Cielo. She has also toured actively with her bands, Trophy Wife and Callowhill, and currently plays in Rainbow Crimes. She co-founded the national Visions in Feminism conference which is still held yearly at American University. She was a member for over twelve years of the group Positive Force DC, a volunteer punk collective that organizes concerts and events for social change and plans community actions. She has done radical sexual assault prevention and survivor solidarity work and workshops.
Ms. Otto previously blogged at Sadie, Bedsider.org and Feministing, and was the Communications Director for the Service Women’s Action Network. She worked for three years at Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania in government and media relations, and currently serves as the Director of Communications for Juvenile Law Center. She is on the Board of Directors for both New Paradise Laboratories and Girls Justice League.
Ms. Otto has extensive experience in social media, communications, press management, contract and grant language development, prospect research, development and strategic planning, work plan construction, capital campaigns, donor development, corporate fundraising, event planning, conference organizing, board development, PR, and editing.
